After getting up from a late lazy book reading morning, I have made some coffee eaten 4 pieces of toast and am considering having a shower and going grocery shopping. I need to get some vegetables at least. I might do some more sewing this afternoon and I was thinking about the movies, but actually think I would enjoy it more if I went next weekend instead and did homely cooking type stock the freezer activities this afternoon (and I still need to vacuum). My feet are cold.

I am a Third Watch addict. I tape it even and it often makes me cry.

I saw the dating game show thing last night – TERRIBLE, though appreciate it certainly would have appealed to the masses it wasn’t my cup of tea.

I have to go to a specialist on Monday about my eye, apparently it wasn’t conjunctivitis, it wasn’t chlamydia, or any miscellaneous virus even! It is getting better, but it’s been 4 weeks and it still hasn’t cleared up completely. I am irritable.

In other health news I have what appears to be a cold, but isn’t. It’s just being a bit sneaky. I have been finding it quite hard to breathe, so there have been puffers for Africa.

My course material is interesting. Why is it that University stuff just seems quite complicated when it sometimes just isn’t? Umm, I bought stationary today. I got some jumbo pads. I love paper.

I have been sort of grumpy lately in a "say things before i have had a chance to think about them" sort of way. Talking to a friend tonight she confessed she is like that all the time, and i wonder if i have been living with high tolerance levels up until i gave up smoking. Did nicotine make me more relaxed about getting dicked around? Where DO you draw the line when it comes to verbalising your annoyance?

Went to see Panic Room this afternoon, and it was really quite good. Seven out of Ten. I didn’t get the can opener or go to the movies, I will do it on the weekend instead.
Did buy however…. (will pay visa back next pay-day, ahh well… I least I got some airports…)
A very cool new necklace (silver, Maori design)
A lasagne dish in a size that I have been looking for, for ages (nice and deep)
And a little fan heater for upstairs when I get up in the morning.
And a Wendy’s Taco salad.
Whee!

Eek, I?m sick! Woke up this morning with a hellishly sore throat and raised glands in my neck. Initially I thought it was just due to the overnight chill, but I called in sick at work when I woke up at 8:30 and all day I have napped and yet I still feel pooey. I have made a doctors appointment tomorrow (may seem a little over the top, but I have a tendency to get ear infections when I suffer tonsillitis without antibiotics) and will probably go into work in the morning. Thank God the new Barbara Anderson novel I brought the other weekend at The Women?s Bookshop is a goodie, as it has been a real comfort. I?m not inspirational tonight.

I?m listening to the cricket on the radio (maybe I should change my name to Larry or Kev or something).

I can?t believe the two commentators. One is South African and the other is Australian. There is a dispute over a catch, apparently it was given not out ? yet apparently it was quite obvious that it was. The commentators are talking about the need for honestly and good sportsmanship. Since WHEN has this ever happened? When was anyone (NZer, Australian, South African) voluntarily walked when they weren?t given out?

I would love to be able to go to my favorite book shop in Takapuna today and buy some books at lunch time. The last time I think I wrote about his here, my car ignition crapped out and I had to call the AA and didn?t go. I drove past yesterday at lunchtime and saw all the yummy books stacked up, but I didn?t have time to stop. I wont go today thou ? even thou I would like to, I couldn?t NOT buy anything and I can do without spending the money and I don?t really need to satisfy the addiction because I have got more than enough books to keep me reading for a couple of months without getting lonely. I am still reading The Blind Assassin (I think it is once of those books if you read twice, you would pick up on a lot more that?s happening) ? after having not looked at anything really literal for a couple of weeks. I stayed up until almost 2 last night reading and woke up in an agro this morning to prove it.

I was going to write about my brother, but the more I think about it, the more annoyed I get, so I might leave it until another time.

Here is a question for the universe. A guy in the office wants to know the name of a song. It?s the Telecom ad, where the two old folk are pashing in bed (the sexuality of the woman is a concern initially). She is obviously an exec who has forgotten a meeting and when she dials into the conference call, he is painting her nails under the table. Know the one? Know the song that goes with it? Apparently it is a Groova- Marda (sp?) song. There is a special present for the person who can tell me what it is.
(Apparently the lyrics go ?If you are fond of sand dunes and salty air?? if that helps)

... but this is so true!

Words women use and what they mean

FINE
This is the word we use at the end of any argument that we feel we are right about but need to shut you up. NEVER use fine to describe how a woman looks. This will cause you to have one of those arguments.

FIVE MINUTES
This is half an hour. It is equivalent to the five minutes that your football game is going to last before you take out the trash, so I feel that it's an even trade.

NOTHING
This means something and you should be on your toes. "Nothing" is usually used to describe the feeling a woman has of wanting to turn you inside out, upside down, and backwards. "Nothing" usually signifies an argument that
will last "Five Minutes" and end with the word "Fine."

GO AHEAD (with raised eyebrows)
This is a dare. One that will result in a woman getting upset over "Nothing" and will end with the word "Fine."

GO AHEAD (normal eyebrows)
This means "I give up" or "do what you want because I don't care." You will get a raised eyebrow "Go Ahead" in just a few minutes, followed by "Nothing" and "Fine" and she will talk to you in about "Five Minutes" when she cools off.

LOUD SIGH
This is not actually a word, but is still often a verbal statement very misunderstood by men. A "Loud Sigh" means she thinks you are an idiot at that moment and wonders why she is wasting her time standing here and arguing with you over "Nothing."

SOFT SIGH
Again, not a word, but a verbal statement. "Soft Sighs" are one of the few things that some men actually understand. She is content. Your best bet is to not move or breathe and she will stay content.

THAT'S OKAY
This is one of the most dangerous statements that a woman can say to a man. "That's Okay" means that she wants to think long and hard before paying you retributions for what ever it is that you have done. "That's Okay" is often used with the word "Fine" and used in conjunction with a raised eyebrow "Go Ahead." At some point in the near future when she has plotted and planned, you are going to be in some mighty big trouble.

PLEASE DO
This is not a statement, it is an offer. A woman is giving you the chance to come up with whatever excuse or reason you have for doing whatever it is that you have done. You have a fair chance to tell the truth, so be careful and you shouldn't get a "That's Okay."

THANKS
A woman is thanking you. Do not faint, just say you're welcome.

THANKS A LOT
This is much different than "Thanks." A woman will say, "Thanks A Lot" when she is really ticked off at you. It signifies that you have hurt her in some callous way, and will be followed by the "Loud Sigh." Be careful not to ask what is wrong after the "Loud Sigh," as she will only tell you "Nothing."

1. You've just won a complete collection of movies starring one actor - what actor would you pick? Anthony Hopkins wins the Gold, James Stewart the Silver and Al Pacino the Bronze

2. What was the last movie you saw in a theatre? Ocean?s Eleven

3. What was the last video or DVD that you bought? To rent it was a collection of 10 from a video shop in Northcote ? and I think the last one I saw of them was ?I still know what you did last summer?

4. What movie could you watch over and over again and not get sick of? Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

5. How do you plan to spend your weekend? Lunch with a friend on Sunday, Saturday not planned, and the way I like it at this stage ? sleep in on both days (or course!) and potentially a little ironing on Sunday night

It?s a great day, I am eating a cold bhuna beef curry with similarly cold onion bhaji and garlic naan? and it is very tasty thankyouverymuch.

I got back to Auckland yesterday. Felt funny about being home to start with, but now I have slept here I feel a lot more comfortable. I have mostly unpacked, and am waiting for a load of washing to go thru before I head around to a friends place this afternoon.

It?s a weird feeling knowing that I am back and that Christmas has been and gone.

I got a nice surprise yesterday when I got home, Annette had left a very cute present in my letter box, I felt quite spesh!

I will update maybe later tonight.

I made some pillowcases today. I had been given 3 valances that were my sisters, but they didn?t fit on my bed, so I decided to unpick them and sew them into cases. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but I do sort have enough of them already anyway. I made up 6 today, and will have enough to make possibly another 6 tomorrow. Sewing pillowcases is remarkably more fun than someone else?s curtains, and Mum?s machine is a lot smoother than mine. Because some of the valance material isn?t wide enough I have decided to make stripe ones, cream and pink, pink and brown. How very creative of me.

I am getting more into The Blind Assassin than I was, although I am trying not to read it much during the day because whenever I do I end up going to sleep for hours, and it ruins my chances of sleeping at night time. I went to the Spotlight sale the other day and bought a cute little cross stitch which I am doing when the fancy takes me during the day. I actually had quite a bit of fun at that sale ? managing to by 3 sets of towels I didn?t quite need and another sheet set (a cute blue check). That reminds me, I must check internet banking later to see how much money I have got.

I am loving this break ? the week I have had off so far has felt like so much longer, I think I might stick around until mid next week, no reason really for me to head back to Auckland any earlier as I don?t start back at work until the 14th. I am really enjoying spending time with the folks.

Mum is on the phone to my sister, so will save this and post a bit later. Hope everyone has a great New Year.

Full tummy. I will use them again, cheap and nice food.
LotR's stuff on TV, very exciting. Julie White has just compared it to Once were Warriers. Huh? Can't wait to see it, enjoyed Peter Jackson's other stuff - even if it was a bit blood and gutsy.

I am sharing my house with a spider. Not just any old spider, but the biggest spider I have ever seen in my life.

I saw it first about 8 months ago (I am trying not to think about the fact that it may have breed and this may be one of many) on my curtain. I was shocked by its size and I was going to get the fly spray out and kill it. Then I thought that was quite mean (after all it was so big, it would have been like killing a small cat using a similar method). Given it?s location was downstairs and I sleep upstairs I didn?t much mind the thought of us sleeping in different quarters.

Today, after cleaning the bathroom, I notice it on my floor (refer to the comment above, regarding multiplication). This time I thought that I would just nip down, get a jar and a Christmas card, scoop it up and put it outside. All the way back to the bathroom I envisaged this Stephen King Spider, growing in size and lurching at me with pincers dripping with blood. I shit you not ? that when I realised it had done the runner on me, I was quite relieved. I didn?t want to look too hard for it, preferring to think it may have had a heart attack and died silently behind the toilet or something. I don?t like the thought of having it on the same level as me, and potentially crawling on me when I sleep, so ignorance is bliss.

Does anyone know anything about NZ spiders? This looks over an inch long, is black (and I didn?t get close enough to see markings on its back). Looks like a massive earwing, but is certainly a spider. If I need to get the pest killers in here I will?.

1. What did you want to be when you grew up? For a long time I wanted to be a nurse, until the whole radio thing took my fancy. I always knew I was going to go to University, but I never really thought about what I was going to study there.

2. Do you have any nicknames? Gem primarily, hokey pokey from my brothers and darling sweetheart daughter from my dad (tell me who the favourite was?) Jemima a little later on at school.

3. If you could change something about yourself what would it be? I would like to worry about things less.

4. Have you ever bought anything from an infomercial? A crazy diet, that I returned within 30 days, and an Easy Rider, which I used about 4 times, and moved from Wgtn to Auckland with me and used it for drying clothes before I gave it away last year.

5. How do you plan to spend your weekend? Tomorrow, moderate sleep in, lunch with friends that are up from Wgtn, and afternoon with Andy. Sunday ? sleeping, writing, maybe a little drive to the shops and a movie.

And funnily enough I have it on my desktop...

If I was a work of art, I would be Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa.

I am extremely popular and widely known. Although unassuming and unpretentious, my enigmatic smile has charmed millions. I am a mystery, able to be appreciated from afar, but ultimately unknowable and thus intriguing.

Which work of art would you be? The Art Test
